Grafana Labs Offers a Full Solution for Kubernetes Monitoring in the Cloud

Grafana Mimir extends metric interoperability with new ingestion and storage for InfluxDB, Datadog, Graphite, and OpenTelemetry metrics.

DETROIT, October 25, 2022– Grafana Labs, the company behind the world’s most ubiquitous open and composable operational dashboards, today announced the latest developments in Kubernetes Monitoring in Grafana Cloud, a turnkey solution for all levels of Kubernetes usage within an organization, integrated with the Grafana dashboards users already know and love. Kubernetes Monitoring is available to all Grafana Cloud users, including those on the generous, forever-free tier. 

Additionally, Grafana Labs is expanding its “Big Tent” philosophy of interoperability by enabling users of Grafana Mimir, its open source, horizontally scalable time series database, to ingest and store InfluxDB, Datadog, Graphite, and OpenTelemetry metrics alongside Prometheus metrics.

Kubernetes Monitoring Features

Grafana Cloud users can simply install the Grafana Agent onto a Kubernetes cluster(s) and in minutes, the Kube-state metrics will be shipped to Prometheus and Grafana. From there, Grafana Cloud users have out-of-the-box access to Kubernetes infrastructure metrics and logs, Kubernetes events, as well as pre-built dashboards and alerts. Highlights include: 

Cluster Navigation

The cluster navigation view has an easy-to-use interface to visualize Kubernetes objects at every level. Users can quickly jump into specific namespaces to see the number of Kubernetes pods running, watch deployments happen in real time, or narrow down any workloads that have pods in an undesirable state. Finally, with cluster navigation, users can drill down to the pod level to see pod status, streaming pod logs, Kubernetes events, container specifics, and important details you need to quickly understand the state of your application.

Node Observability

With its bird’s eye view of all the nodes in a cluster and the condition of those nodes, Kubernetes Monitoring allows users to quickly pinpoint issues and improve the efficiency of their Kubernetes fleet. Node capacity, utilization, and resource management indicators offer instant assessments of whether nodes are over- or under-provisioned. With a single click, users can then explore unhealthy pod logs to troubleshoot. 

Pre-built Grafana Dashboards

Today installing the Grafana Agent will also populate several pre-built Kubernetes dashboards and alerts to monitor CPU usage at the cluster, namespace, workload, and pod levels. So Grafana Cloud users can instantly start keeping track of resources used, running pods, and storage operations all within the dashboards.

Grafana Mimir Ingests Multiple New Metric Types 

Grafana Mimir, which was launched in March 2022 with native support for Prometheus metrics, now also enables ingestion of Influx, Datadog, Graphite, and OpenTelemetry metrics. Observability teams are often responsible for supporting legacy metric types alongside Prometheus data, managing multiple backends and agents, and learning multiple query languages. With the ingestion of these new metric types, Grafana Labs leans into the “big tent” philosophy by providing an agent-agnostic backend that allows organizations to ingest data from as many sources as possible while leveraging a single query language, PromQL.
